Designer Review: Richard Mishaan

He’s an architect, interior designer, fashion designer, author, and shop owner. He has an eclectic style with a talent for mixing vintage or antiques with modern. Columbia born, Richard Mishaan group up in Bogota, Columbia he is now based out of New York City where he lives with his wife and two children. To get back to his roots he has a vacation home in Cartagena, Columbia.

He has a very unique take on interior design that most in New York don’t. He told the New York Post, “I don’t like it when someone walks away from something because it’s not expensive enough. I think it’s really more about having an eye than having a certain amount of money.” To reinforce that philosophy, he has a couch in his own home that is over 20 years old. “They’ve been re-upholstered once, but I feel like if you buy good things one time, they’ll just last.”

In 2013 he reopened his furniture shop, Homer, in Greenwich Village. It had previously been open from 1997 to 2008 on Madison Avenue. His stylish shop sells a wide variety of items from contemporary to vintage and even sells pieces from his own furniture line. Additionally he transforms it four times a year. He told the New York Times,“We’ll lighten things up for summer and have more-substantial pieces for the holidays.”

On top of his commercial and residential design work and his shop, he also has a home furnishings line offered through HSN. He is one busy guy.

As a NYC resident, Mishaan knows the value of decorating a small space. Here are some tips he shared with the New York Post on how to decorate a small space:

Let in the Light

Open a space up and create height by painting the walls a warm white color and the ceilings a brighter white color.

Create Space

“Float” a bed away from the wall. This helps you gain more usable space in a room by not wasting wall real estate. Then, for example, you can put a desk up against the headboard to create two usable spaces.
