There are said to be over 600 different species of oak, although not all are seen as suitable for flooring. Oak comes in a huge variety of shades and also responds well to different finishes, meaning you would have no problem finding a variety of oak to suit your home.
Most oak trees live for 200 years or more, with some being said to have lived for up to 800 years. This makes it pretty clear to see why it is such a great choice for hardwood flooring!
One of the reasons why oak has always been a very popular choice when it comes to flooring and furniture is because of its great strength and durability. Oak has a density of 0.75 grams per cubic centimetre, making it one of the densest naturally occurring substances. This makes it great for flooring, as it will be hardwearing enough to last a lifetime.
As well as being a popular choice for hardwood flooring, oak has also been used for many years in barrels for storing red wines, brandy, whiskey and other types of alcohol. Ageing alcohol in oak barrels gives it a unique flavour and aroma.

One of the most popular ways of finishing a hardwood floor has always been to add a layer of wax or varnish to it. There are a variety of different types of wax and varnish you can use on your floor, depending on the type of wood you have and the type of finish you want – some people might prefer a matte finish, while others may want a glossier finish.
An easy way to completely change the appearance of your wooden flooring is to give it a coat of paint, especially with such a wide variety of different colours available. This can breathe new life into older flooring and make it look brand new again!
One of the big hardwood flooring trends for 2015 is patterned floors. While some people will paint a pattern across the entire floor, others will simply add a patterned border to their floor. Either way, it’s a great way of customising your floor.
You can’t discuss customised hardwood flooring without mentioning parquet flooring. Parquet flooring is made by cutting wood into blocks or tiles and arrange these in whatever geometric pattern you like – herringbone and basket weave are two consistently popular patterns for parquet flooring.
