There's nothing wrong with some can lights or recessed lighting...in your ceiling.
As a matter of fact, I often add them on a remodel job, because most homes around here come with a lame ceiling fan with bad light attachment at the bottom of the fan, or maybe even a fluorescent box over the kitchen island.
However, when we add them in we try to create a simple grid type pattern or layout. And we never want to make them stand out in a ceiling by using black baffles.
Use white baffles, please; or, better yet, go ahead and invest in LED lamps in your existing can lights for an even less intrusive and less noticeable penetration in your ceiling. We want light to be apparent — without calling attention to the source — when using recessed lighting. While it's important to put light where it's needed, and many times that can trump an overall grid-like layout, don't get carried away like they did here in the VRBO we were staying in last week in California. This is likely the worst, most random placement of lighting I've ever seen. All I could think of was…
Swiss cheese.
