New York interior designer Thom Filicia is a design superstar. He owns his own design firm, Thom Filicia, Inc., with clients that range from Tina Fey and Jennifer Lopez to Delta Airlines and W Hotels. He's written and contributed to several design books and has his own home goods collection. On top of that he starred as an interior design expert on the hit show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

With all that in mind, we had to take a closer look at some of the design tips from this A-list designer. Here are some of our favorite finds:

Patterns and Color

In an interview with Elle Décor, Filicia said he recommends “bringing bold patterns and pops of color into a room to give it personality and depth.” He points out that make people are more willing to take risks with color and patterns in their wardrobe, but not when it comes to their own home decorating choices. If you find yourself afraid to make bold choices, “take inspiration, guidance, and lessons from fashion.”

Kitchens Are For Entertaining

Filicia points out that, when entertaining, its inevitable that guests will end up in the kitchen. Therefore make your kitchen a space that is perfect for entertaining yet is also livable and warm.

In another interview with Elle Décor he suggests the following when planning a kitchen. First, “go with open shelving/glass front cabinet doors to accessorize, display artifacts and reveal items for guests, like glasses-so they don't go poking through your cabinets.” Next, “use color and texture to make the room feel inviting, fresh and a little zippy. Set the tone with an intriguing color combination.” Lastly, “keep the mood light with unexpected artwork or zany accessories.”

Changes on a Budget

If you're on a budget but want to infuse new life into your home, Filicia has several tips on how to spice up your home without spending a lot. Right away, the change with the biggest impact would be to paint a room or space a new color, whether you do the whole room or just an accent wall.

Additionally, repurpose what you have and buy a select piece or two with personality and pizazz to add character. To give seating a new look, buy pillow slipcovers that can be switched out at any time for a new look.
