Designer Review: Ken Fulk, Creative Genius

Ken Fulk is one of San Francisco’s current design stars. His clients are made up of the Bay Area’s upper crust and beyond, from hedge fund managers to “old money” to more famous names.

His current business, Ken Fulk Inc., is located out of an industrial brick warehouse that began as an S&M factory in the 1920s. His core business is design but recently he’s branched out into architecture. He’s also been known to put on the hats for event planning, concierge service, or personal stylist for his clients. His most recent endeavor is a home furnishings line for Pottery Barn that launches in a couple weeks.

He’s known for his flamboyant imaginative style, the relationships he builds with his clients, and his ability to do fabulous turnkey projects in just weeks.

His Path to the Design World

He grew up in a small town in Virginia and ended up in Boston where he met his now husband, classically trained pianist Kurt Wootton. Together they moved to San Francisco where Fulk worked as a textile designer and then authored a funky children’s storybook called Doodle Zoo. With no clear career path at that time he started preparing model homes, which led to him remodeling a friend’s home. Even though he had no formal training he described that project as if something clicked and his career was born. From there word got around about his creative turnkey process and soon he his design business flourished.

Unconventional Business

Fulk got an unconventional start in the interior design business and continues to work in an unconventional fashion. In his current staff of almost 50, Fulk doesn’t hire anyone with previous interior design experience. While it’s partially because of inspiring creativity, he told San Francisco Business Times it’s also because “he didn’t want a conventionally trained outsider telling him how to do things the “right way” or what was going on in the design world”. He has employees who range from teachers to artists (and anyone in between) that are “smart, engaged and talented”.

Mr. Fulk’s Peep Show

His design business works similar to that of a think tank, where it’s based on collaboration from the combined staff. One of their unique offerings, in line with this process, is Mr. Fulk’s Peep Show. It’s an ever-evolving creative space located on the ground floor of the firm’s warehouse studio. It currently serves as an “art gallery, design emporium, and event space”.
