Vintage Upcycled Laminate Serving Tray

It is trash to treasure time again and today I would love to share another great DIY weekend project. I hoped you like the repurposed laminate flooring coat hanger I made last time. This time, I am upcycling an old mirrored serving tray that I got for free. Yes, free. I can never turn down a good bargain! This tray was a little beat up, however I could still see the beauty underneath. In a few steps you can turn this piece of trash into treasure. Here is how you make this Vintage Upcycled Laminate Serving Tray.

Skill Level: Beginner

Time: One hour plus two hour drying time.

Materials:

• Old Tray
• Laminate Flooring Plank of Choice
• Saw
• Measuring Tape
• Pencil
• Glue
• Spray Paint
• Newspaper
• Screwdriver
• Hardware
• Drill

Instructions:

For this project, I chose “Vintage” laminate flooring by Krono Original. The size of the plank is 50.59”X4.84”X8mm. This piece was perfect for a vintage upcycled serving tray makeover. I love the print on it. It looks like a vintage wine crate.

Here is the tray BEFORE. It’s nice and sturdy and the handles are in great condition.

You can see the etching is rubbed off and the tray has a few dings. You can find inexpensive trays at thrift stores for only a few dollars. I have made over many MANY thrift store trays in my day! It doesn’t have to be a tray. You can also use an old mirror with a wooden frame and add handles. You can also opt to use an old wooden picture frame and add hardware.

First measure the tray both vertically and horizontally. Next measure and mark your laminate. Two planks happen to fit perfectly into this tray. Using a saw carefully cut the planks to size.

Remove that hardware from the tray. I chose to spray paint the tray in a pewter gray color. I spray painted it in two coats, allowing a drying time of about fifteen minutes in between coats. Be sure to protect your surfaces from the spray paint and spray in a well-ventilated area. Two light coats are better than one heavy coat. This will avoid paint drips. Allow the tray to dry completely.

Make sure your fresh cut laminate planks are clean and free from debris. After the paint is completely dry on your tray, interlock your clean planks and insert then into your tray. Be sure not to scratch the paint on the sides of your tray. Depending on the glue, it should be completely dry in about two hours.

That’s it! What a transformation! The tray is a little heavy, but I have to say, it’s gorgeous and gorgeous outweighs heavy! It also makes a great decorative piece for a coffee table. With a little imagination and some TLC, you can turn an unwanted garage sale or thrift store find and turn it into something beautiful! DIY projects like this also make great handmade gifts.
