In the 1970’s, Vicente Wolf bounced around various careers until he was in the right place at the right time and discovered interior design. He met established designer Bob Patino who quickly became his mentor.
Design was a natural fit for him. He grew up in Cuba with family who worked in construction so he was introduced to architecture at a young age and was inspired early on to draw and design rooms.
He began his design career freelancing for various other designers around New York, which he claims taught him what kind of designer he wanted to be and how to execute his business. After doing his own thing for several years, he officially partnered with Patino in their design firm Patino/Wolf Associates in the late 70s.
After working with Patino for a decade, he branched out on his own in 1988 and developed his own firm, Vicente Wolf Associates Inc.
Here are a few of our favorite design tricks from Vicente’s repertoire.
White, white, white!
Vicente’s favorite paint color for walls is pure white. White walls create a gallery-like effect with the walls allowing you to put the focus on the things within a home. Since he’s traveled the world collecting furniture and art from all over, a blank canvas allows him to showcase his collection.
Mix and match.
Vicente fully believes in mixing design periods, styles, and qualities. For him, the pairing of objects and furniture is instinctual. However, he says anyone should mix and match what they like because it’s all about being visually pleasing to the person who lives there.
Don’t be afraid to experiment.
Even though a lot of his design approach is instinctual, he also does a lot of experimenting with layouts and details. Don’t just stick to what is conventional. You should move things around until they create the right look you’re going for. What might not work in one configuration might make the perfect look when tried in another combination.
Luckily for the design world, Vicente has come a long way since his acting and bank teller days. His career spanned 35 years and has included celebrity clients such Julianna Margulies and Clive Davis.
“I’ve worked with Vicente on several homes. To each he’s brought individuality, imagination, and great style. He has his own vision, but he collaborates and respects his client’s wishes. Vicente is at the top of his game and is clearly the best of the best.” —Clive Davis
