Let's be real here, how many of you actually eat at your dining room table now a days? I'm sure some of you do, and that's great! For the other half though, the dining room is rarely used, except when you have company.

When it comes to decorating, you usually redecorate it to incorporate the latest holiday or event you’re celebrating. The rest of the year however, you're not sure what to do with it. Letting your dining room sit undecorated year round can make your home a little less, well, homey. Dining room décor is beautiful and elegant. Without using it, you could be missing out on a key element of style in your home.

Here are some fun and practical ideas for decorating a dining room:

The Dining Table

The dining room table is the most important feature in the dining room. It’s practical, used for eating a meal and stylish, assuming you buy one in a style you like that matches your theme.

Make sure to buy a table that fits the space appropriately. While you want to buy a table large enough for the people in your household, you also need to keep a distance of 3.5 to 4 feet between the edge of the table to the surrounding walls and furniture. This will allow diners enough room to scoot their chairs in and out safely and comfortably and for foot traffic behind. If you have a small family, but lots of guests when you entertain, maybe invest in a table that uses extra leaves to expand!

Flooring

Another big decision when designing your dining room is the flooring. Chances are you won’t want to risk carpet getting food stains all over – it is a dining room after all – so laminate flooring is a great way to go. It’s durable and very easy to clean. There are many choices so you’ll be able to find an option to go with your style preferences.

If you’re one of those that like the feel of carpet under foot, you can go with a rug under the dining table. This way you can clean it easily and replace it more easily than if it were permanent carpet. Make sure the rug is large enough for diners to push out their chairs without going over the rug. We recommend pushing out the chairs, as if you were going to sit down, and measuring from one chair to the chair across from it.

Floating Shelves

A fun, but also practical, storage solution AND decorative idea is to create floating shelves on one of the bare dining room walls. It’s the perfect way to display your nice dishes, serving platters, and fancy glassware. If you are concerned about antiques being knocked off the walls, search for a curio cabinet to display your items in instead. Just keep in mind, this will take up floor space as well as wall space.

Decorative Plate Wall

What better way to cap off decorating the dining room than to create a plate wall? If you collect beautiful vintage plates this is a great way to display them… if not what better reason to start? You can purchase varying sized plate hangers at any craft store and unique plates can be found at antique shops, thrift stores, or garage sales at reasonable prices.

For the arrangement, have fun. You can do a uniform pattern, such as a square, where you’ll need to measure it out beforehand. Or you can go with a fun whimsical pattern of your choice by hanging each plate one by one in in the location of your choosing. Either way, the result will be a whimsically decorated wall filled with colorful plates.
