I love the look and price of laminate but I’m worried about exposing my newborn to formaldehyde. Is it safe to install laminate in a nursery? Or should I choose the more expensive hardwood flooring?

Keeping your child safe is your highest priority. You’re watching your diet during pregnancy and prepping your home so it’s safe as soon as your little one starts to crawl. It’s normal to worry about the flooring in your child’s room and want to select the best option for their health.
There have been reports of formaldehyde found in laminate flooring. To avoid buying any dangerous types of products for your home (and especially for your nursery), here are a few tips.
Look for the CARB2 or E1 compliancy
If you’re unsure about a type of laminate, ask about it’s CARB2 rating. If it is a European product, such as Kronoswiss, you may find an E1 rating, which is similar to the CARB2. This stands for California’s Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Phase 2. It’s a strict standard for testing the amount of formaldehyde in wood products. This includes any type of particleboard or other type of composite wood.
In laminate, the formaldehyde emissions come from the composite layer of wood below the decorative surface. If a product is compliant, it will be labeled as such. With these strict air testing standards in place, you can rest assured that your home will have a safe air quality when using laminate flooring.
Beware of Other Products
We care about your family’s health. It’s important to note that formaldehyde isn’t only found in laminate. It’s also found in furniture, tissues, air fresheners, and nail polish. It’s important to research all products before using them in your household.
Other Considerations
In regards to hardwood floors, you may want to consider the overall durability of the floor. A hardwood floor is more susceptible to damage with spills, surface scratching and staining. With a nursery first and then transitioning through the years, a laminate might be the better route to go for a more durable floor, such as a laminate.
