If ever two people were meant to be together it’s Chip and Joanna Gaines. The dynamic duo is a combination of talent and brawn that embodies Southern decor.
The entrepreneurial pair was married 2003 and has gone on to create a very successful business for themselves, Magnolia Homes. It’s made up of four parts:
- Magnolia Market – featuring products hand selected by Joanna, sold locally and online
- Magnolia Realty – the real estate side, Chip’s area of expertise
- Magnolia Homes – the renovation and design side, Joanna’s expertise
- Joanna’s blog – features projects and DIY ideas as well as updates on their business
Joanna’s blog caught the attention of HGTV and they have since become a household name through their show, Fixer Upper. The show features the pair walking clients through the entire process of purchasing a home, remodeling and design projects, and decorating it.
They have four kids and are based out of Waco, Texas. On their website, they describe themselves as “Southern Grown, Locally Sown” and say they’re working to make their town a more beautiful place.
They embody Southern décor in their own beautiful home, a 100-year-old farmhouse. Here’s some Southern decor inspiration from a look at their farmhouse tour they gave Country Living.
Main Floor Open Layout
A main floor open layout is a major feature in most of their remodels on their show, and is also found in their own home. Knocking down walls to combine the kitchen, dining room, and family room is the perfect way to create a great inclusive living space for the whole family. It’s also perfect for entertaining guests while doing prep at the same time.
They’ve achieved a feeling of unity in the flow of their open layout main floor.
Creative Storage and Function
Every home needs storage options, but it doesn’t have to be sterile. Smart storage solutions can be extremely functional yet also visually interesting and inviting. For example, they pair industrial looking wire baskets in a rustic bookshelf and wooden trays to create an inviting storage place that can be used for books, knickknacks, blankets and more.
Character Details
Details with character are what makes the Gaines’ home a home and makes Joanna’s decorating style so successful. Everything in their home has character and brings the space to life, from the wooden signs throughout, including the inspirational sign in the entry and the ‘super market’ sign in their kitchen, to the reclaimed wood coffee table and shutters above the couch in the living room. Additionally, they take it one step further by making it personal and including family photos throughout their home.
