When it comes to home renovation projects, one area where you don’t want to do it yourself is changing the dimensions of a room. Taking out a wall with a sledgehammer may look like a lot of fun on a design TV show, but it’s much more precarious in real life. Even the professionals often are surprised by what they find when they start tampering with walls: electrical issues, plumbing issues, asbestos, lead paint, support beams, and so on. Unless you have a lot of first-hand experience, it pays to hire a professional.
Now, you may have in mind to hire a general contractor to remove or move that wall. My advice is work with an interior designer. Here’s why: A general contractor is going to look at your plan and see a wall. An interior designer is going to look at the same plan and see a room – a place that has your stuff in it and where people are going to live. A designer is going to want to know what you plan to put in the room (and whether it will all fit), how you are going to use it, what you want it to look like when it’s finished, and whether you’ve planned for adequate lighting, storage, outlets, plumbing, etc. A designer is going to check that your furnishings, appliances, fixtures, and such are in scale with the new dimensions of the room, so that the final design is balanced and harmonious.
If you’re considering transforming your current kitchen, dining and living areas into a great room, or enlarging a master bedroom or bath, contact us. We’ll match you with several designers who will suit your needs, style and budget – and deliver a beautiful room that you can live with.
