Merry Mantels

Greetings friends! Yesterday was an epic day, we spent it at the Australia Zoo and I got to do this! We only have four more days left in Australia before we’re headed home on Saturday, our next stop is Sydney and I’m crazy excited to see that city. We’re celebrating Thanksgiving there too – there are restaurants that host it for us Americans down under so we will have our turkey and pumpkin pie. :)

How about a little mantel inspiration to get you in the mood for Christmas? Yes yes I know it’s Thanksgiving this week, but I’ve never been one to wait to decorate and I’m looking forward to adding a few more holiday touches to our home when I get back to California. I spied some lovely holiday décor in catalogs and online from some favorite retailers and magazines this season, thought I’d share.

A Must-Do Project We’d Rather Not Be Spending Money On

Repointing A WallAt the beginning of every year we set ourselves a few home improvement goals. It’s good to have a rough idea of what we want to achieve and having something to aim for is also a great way to stay motivated. Although it’s already November we still have a lot of projects on our goal...

Last Minute Tips for Protecting Laminate Floors During Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is almost here! It’s every food-lovers favorite holiday. Unfortunately, it’s also the day when pots get dropped, wine gets spilled, and food gets tossed around the dining room.

As you gather around your table to give thanks for the food before you and the family beside you, don’t forget to take care of the floor below you.

Although durable, laminate flooring is can be dented, stained, and scratched when not taken care of properly. On holidays like Thanksgiving, it’s not uncommon to see these damages unfold. As much as you would like to think you are paying attention to everything, you may wake up the day after Thanksgiving to see a wine spill that you missed that has now seeped into your floor.

You have enough to worry about this Thanksgiving. That’s why we’re offering you a few tips for protecting laminate floors during your Thanksgiving feast.

Tip #1: Use an Area Rug

The majority of the spills will happen at your dining room table. When the wine starts flowing and conversations get more and more lively, there is a good chance that someone will drop a glass or spill some food. That’s not a problem if it’s cleaned up right away. If it’s ignored, someone could slip on it or it could cause your floor to warp. With an area rug protecting your floors, you don’t have to worry about that damage.

Tip #2: Leave Shoes in the Mudroom/Entryway

Most of the country is knee deep in snow or rain. With wet weather, comes snow, mud, and salt that get dragged inside with winter boots and shoes.

Make your guests feel more at home, while protecting your floors, by asking them to remove their shoes before coming in to your home. Have them leave them in the mudroom or entryway on a towel or rug. Offer some extra cozy socks or slippers to your guests if you have them! Let everyone enjoy some comfortable, cozy warmth while you relax without worry about the abuse your floors are getting from the extra foot traffic.

Tip #3: Have a spill kit ready.

Spills are bound to happen. When they do, you’ll need to act relatively quickly so that no one slips and falls, and your floors don’t get damaged.

Prepare a small spill kit to have on hand so you can reach for it, clean up the spill, and get on with entertaining. Put a paper towel, dry cloth, and any laminate flooring cleaning solution in an easy to reach place. This way you’re prepared and more relaxed.

Tip #4: Prepare your furniture.

Couches will be pushed around, chairs will be pulled out from the dining room tables, and your floors will be at risk of getting scratched in the process. Before your guests arrive, make sure each chair leg has a small piece of felt underneath it. That’ll reduce the chances of dirt and added pressure from scratching the floors.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner worry free with these tips from Passion for Home, Bestlaminate’s blog. We hope that you are able to spend this day with your family and loved ones. Eat, drink, and be happy!

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Bestlaminate!

Tips For Decorating and Organizing a Kids Bathroom

Are you looking to decorate and organize your kids’ bathroom but dreading the overload of Disney, super heroes or cartoons? Avoiding a fight between siblings who can’t decide between a princess or SpongeBob Squarepants theme?

You do a lot to keep your children happy, but you don’t need to indulge in requests that will change in a few months anyway. There are many great ideas for kids bathroom décor your entire family will love.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Don’t Be Afraid of Color

A kid’s bathroom can still be fun and playful without incorporating their favorite characters. This will last longer and keep them happier, minimizing the amount of extra work you need to add to your plate.

Use your children’s favorite bold bright colors. Paint the small space a fun color and add a coordinating shower curtain, wall art, and bath towels to make it pop.

Need a little extra color inspiration? Try choosing themes that are timeless such as under the sea, nautical modern, or chic.

Decorate and Inspire

Fun, colorful, and inspirational artwork make great additions to any bathroom. They’re a cost effective way of adding style to your space. For example, pictures that say “Wash Your Hands” or “Wash Brush Floss Flush” can serve as gentle reminders of bathroom tasks while adding color and style.

You can also get the kids inspired by including them in the bathroom decorating process. Start by letting them help choose the theme or colors so that they’ll feel ownership in the space. Then let them create some of the artwork. You can let them draw something and seal it to a canvas or help them create hand print paintings on canvas (such as a hand print fish or crab for a sea theme).

Organize

A kid’s bathroom can turn to chaos quickly if you don’t get a handle on organizing it up front. Here are some ideas on how to organize this small space:

  • Use a different mason jar for each kid and use adhesive letters to spell out their names on each one. These can then be used to hold their individual toothbrushes, toothpaste, small mouthwash, and floss.
  • Instead of a towel bar, use towel hooks. You can have a hook for each kid and put their initial above (or numbers for birth order) to avoid any confusion in which towel is theirs.
  • If you don’t like the mason jar idea and have drawer space, you can use kitchen drawer organizers to hold the various tooth brushes, toothpaste, floss and anything else small.
  • Create a bath toy organizer in the tub to reign in the bath toy clutter.
  • Maximize the under the sink storage space with stacking plastic bins or a sliding shelf.
  • Create over the toilet shelving for additional storage space.

DIY Corkboard Wall

Mix This With That: Reading Nooks

Hello! I meant to post yesterday but we’ve been having so much fun making new friends down under the day got away from me. This time of year as the weather turns colder in the States, we all look for places to curl up with a tablet, shelter mags, or good book to pass the time with a cozy blanket over your lap.

I invited five stylish blogger friends to “Mix This With That” and the challenge was to create a chic reading nook complete with chair (or chaise), side table, lamp, and accent pillow. I spent time with all five of these ladies at the Better Homes & Gardens Stylemaker Event in September and I’m happy they’re all here today to mix chairs, lamps, and accents to create a reading corner.

I’ve followed Jennifer of Rambling Renovators for years, she’s delightful both in person and on her popular blog and displays amazing taste in her adventures in decorating and renovation!

“This look is all about mixing modern and traditional. The graceful lines of the side table and linen chaise (perennials classic weave in fog) play against the fashion forward accent pillow (how fun is the exposed brass zipper) and the minimal yet delicate table lamp. This reading nook would look striking in my imaginary bedroom suite, but it’s comfortable enough that I could happily read myself to sleep in that chaise.”

~ Jen

Emily A. Clark is a favorite, always sharing her design tips and tricks on decorating with amazing style along with her insights on motherhood. Emily’s reading corner combines two of my faves, deep pink and indigo.

Emily grounded her corner with the manchester chaise in bold magenta velvet – the iconic chiang mai blue accent pillow adds dramatic flair. Partnered with a budget friendly navy blue accent table and the pharmacy pole lamp, she creates a corner  where anyone would love to spend an hour or two.

. .

I met Darlene of Fieldstone Hill Design in person a few months ago but have loved reading her blog for over a year. She has such an eye for great design and I look forward to her decorating posts, she is always teaching us something new!

Darlene mixed the oh so luxurious avery chair with a casual yet contrasting pillow in taupe and mint. The side table is a conversation piece with its intricate detail, the cone floor lamp highlights the reading material of whomever is lucky enough to sit right here!

Kristin of Bliss at Home is an inspiration, she manages to do it all and I marvel at her talents! Super mom, designer, and blogger, she’s definitely one to follow!

“Reading is one of the ways I love to relax, so I opt for a chaise over a chair. Feet up! Relaxation is all sensory so a soft velvet pillow adds some comfort to the lounging. A great reading lamp is key and I am so into the lamps and lighting Rejuvenation is putting out right now. A table is a must to set your coffee mug on and I dig the modern tulip table to mix with the traditional.”

~ Kristin

I’ve followed Megan of Honey We’re Home for years, she and I share a dedication to fitness and she’s about to become a mom again! Megan has classic style and flawless taste!

“I have this chair and it is very nice in person at a great price point! I think that faux fur throw pillow is so cozy for the holidays! :)” Also shown is the terrace side table and petite arc metal floor lamp, both from West Elm.

Do these ladies know how to style a reading nook or what? Thanks so much Jennifer, Emily, Darlene, Kristin, and Megan for pulling together such inspirational spaces, I’d take ANY of them, wouldn’t you?!

I really love a rustic chic style; it’s kind of my own style.

And even though I like to work on all kinds of projects, it’s especially fun when I get a project that aligns with my own personal aesthetic.

So…

I’ve done a little shopping.

For me, for you, and anyone you know who has this similar style in their home.

This style combines texture, natural materials, some bronze, gold, and silver metallic touches.

I like touches of black for contrast, rustic wood tones, and maybe one accent color. The more varied the colors you put in a space are, the less likely the natural, textural elements will stand out. So I’m not a fan of a cacophony of color in spaces that are designed in this style.

I do like large, oversized items. That tray is large and gorgeous; we used it in a client’s home recently for her coffee area. It’s quite impressive.

I’ve used the bronze knot several times on projects, it’s sort of my go-to accessory, and it’s becoming a bit of signature for me. It appeals to many and works in lots of different types of spaces. Everyone picks it up and handles it, as it feels good to the touch.

Petrified wood decor items are so hot now. I love these nesting tables from Interlude. They can go anywhere to help fill in a room and add a little style.

This little shopping trip below has some items that would be perfect gifts for the rustic chic style lover in your life.

Happy Shopping! ;-)
