Designer Review: Alexa Hampton

Can you imagine being the daughter to one of “The World’s Twenty Greatest Designers of All Time”? Alexa Hampton can and she is a designer herself because of it.

Her father, Mark Hampton, was known as a legend in the interior design world. He founded his own company, Mark Hampton LLC, in 1976 and over his career had many elite clients across the world, including numerous U.S. governmental commissions. When he died in 1998, Alexa gained ownership and leadership of the company.

She has created a name for herself in the design world and has won many of her own awards and honors, including an honorary doctorate from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia and a spot on Architectural Digest’s “100 of the World’s Best Interior Designers and Architects” list.

And she’s more than just an interior designer. She also designs furniture, fabric, lighting and carpets. If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she also wrote two successful design books. She served as senior design consultant and was the only female cast member, for PBS TV’s This Old House.

Her Design Philosophy

She’s been known to describe her design philosophy as the “Julie Andrews approach to design”. She told the NY Times “once you know the notes to sing, you can sing most anything. If you know the most basic aspects of the language of interior design, you can speak in any idiom, be it modern or traditional or in between.”

In an interview with One Kings Lane she went on to describe her philosophy further: “I believe there are four components of design that take a room beyond pretty or livable and make it extraordinary: contrast, proportion, color, and balance. To me, these essential elements represent hundreds of years of reasoned design choices that are critical to the way I approach space.”

When It Comes to Renovating

Alexa recently renovated her New York City apartment, which consisted of combining her original apartment with the apartment she and her husband bought next door.

In a video for Architectural Digest, Alexa mentioned three things that are important when renovating your home:

Patience.

She said the secret to any good renovation is patience. It’s not going to happen over night. Take the time to plan out the renovation in detail and partner with a quality architect so that you know that the structure is done well.

Create Scale.

Keep scale in mind. Just because you have high walls does not mean things need to be placed high. For example, sconces should be at eye level to create “lift and verticality” and not higher on the walls centered between floor and ceiling.

Be Confident.

You like what you like so don’t be ashamed of it because there is no one right way to design a space. If you need help, don’t be afraid to hire an interior designer to help bring your vision to life.
